Castiglione del Lago, once the fourth island of Lake Trasimeno (the other three being Polvese, Maggiore and Minore), sits on a piece of land fashioned after an earthquake when the water in the lake settled.

Federico the 2nd of Svevia (XIII century) built the fortified city with its castle and centre planned around three paralleled roads. The city walls have three gateways: Perugina, Fiorentina and Sienese. In 1500 the Della Corgna family reorganized the city centre on two streets and built a large palace (nowadays the Council offices), joined to the tower by a covered passageway. The interior is decorated with a series of frescoes by Niccolò Circignani in the historical umbrian style.
The most impressive building is, without doubt, the castle with four towers, which represents one of the most important examples of military art in Umbria.
Amongst events not to miss there are the Tulip Festival in April, Kyte Festival at the end of April and beginning of may, and the Trasimeno Blues Festival in July.
