Cetona is a small town situated at the foot of vulcanic Mount Cetona (1148 m.). There are traces of human inhabitation from the Neanderthal period, 50.000 years ago, thanks to the remains found in the caves of Monte Cetona: this was an extraordinary prehistoric community, where the first civilizations evolved, like our etruscan ancestors.
Precious remains, from previous civilizations, the result of excavations in the Twenties and Thirties can be seen in Perugia nd Florence. Tools and other remains can be found in the local museum at Cetona. In mediaeval times (XV century) Cetona was a part of Siena, but today only the old tower can be seen from the Sienese city walls with their gateways and tower.
A place worth noting is the Convento of Saint Francis (2 km) founded by Saint Francis of Assisi.
