Chiusi sits above the Val di Chiana to the South. It is known for its Etruscan tombs and its historic centre. It is easily reached from both Rome and Florence on the Autostrada del Sole (A1) and is 3 km from the junction for Chiusi/Chianciano Terme .
Founded by the Etruscans, Chiusi was at its greatest under the reign of King Porsenna. In the IV century it was taken over by the Romans and became “Clusium”. It was of great importance at this time because of the Via Cassia. The remains of the fortress, still visible, date from this time. After the Romans Chiusi became the seat of the Longobard Dukedom and was the setting for the struggles between Florence and Siena which lasted till 1415, when it became part of the Republic of Siena. Chiusi was in decline up until the XVI century when it came under the control of the Florentine Medici's, and Cosimo I initiated the reclamation of the territory which signalled its economic revival. The city remained under the control of Florence until the Unification of Italy.
Chiusi is in reality divided into two different cities: one above the ground and the other under the ground. The underground city is a series of tunnels and galleries constructed in the time of the famous Etruscan King Porsenna. Legend has it that he is buried somewhere under the hills with a carriage with 12 horses, a hen and 12.000 chickens all made in gold.
Important to be seen in this area is Lake Chiusi and, nearby, the two towers “Béccati questo” and “Béccati quello”, that remain as evidence of the battles between Chiusi and Perugia.
Among several celebrations taking place periodically in Chiusi we point out the “Grape and Wine Festival”.
