Montepulciano sits on the ridge between the Valdichiana and the Val d’Orcia, located in the south of Tuscany, in the province of Siena. The economy of the town is mainly based on growing vines and olive trees with the production of the famous wine called "Vino Nobile di Montepulciano" (Noble Wine of Montepulciano). Tourism is also very important, promoted by the natural beauty of the hilly landscape characterized by thick woodlands. The place name comes from the unity of the word "Monte" and the Latin word "Policiano" with its collective meaning of "rural" that later became "Pulciano". The first settlements in the area of Montepulciano go back to the Etruscan Age. The main street runs along the ridge, rising to the Piazza Grande, the highest point of the town with its Renaissance Palaces. During the summer Montepulciano hosts Cantiere Internazionale d'Arte, an arts festival started by the german composer Hans Werner Henze. Also of importance, in August, there is the Bruscello and the Bravìo delle Botti. Many people also visit the Terme of Montepulciano Spa, in Sant'Albino.
