The hill of Panicale, once part of Chiusi with its Etruscan, Norman and Longobardian origins, was from the XIII century an important strategic point for Perugia, because of its dominant position on the hills between Perugia and Città della Pieve. The city walls have two gateways: Fiorentina and Perugina, and a series of towers. The original centre, which looks out over the Lake Trasimeno like a natural terrace, has a circular interior with three squares: at the bottom there is the old “Piazza del Comune” with his beautiful travertine fountain dated 1473. Higher up there is the Piazza della Collegiata di San Michele Arcangelo, and finally the square where is situated the gothic Palazzo del Podestà. Outside the Fiorentina gateway is found the Church of Saint sebastian where it is possible to admire the famous frescoes of Pietro Perugino “Il Martirio di San Sebastiano”. The Museum of the Madonna della Sbarra and the Theatre Cesare Caporali are also places worth noting. Local events are nearly always of a traditional country nature, for example every year the Grape Festival and Olive Festival.
